Chairman Byeong Hee Kim from Heesung & H donated 100 million won to Ajou’s Pleasant Innovation Fund as an expression of his acknowledgement of the University's project missions. On April 28th, President Dong Yeon Kim presented a plaque of appreciation and a gift to Chairman Kim in Ajou's Yulgok Hall during the ceremony to mark his donation. Heesung & H specializes in making and distributing cosmetics and not only sells products in the Korean market, but exports to China and Southeast Asia. In his greetings, Chairman Kim said, “President Kim and I attended the same commercial high school under difficult financial conditions and both of us have succeeded through our own efforts. I am donating to the Pleasant Innovation projects because I acknowledge and support their missions. I understand that they were initiated by President Kim when he began to lead Ajou after leaving the civil service. I hope that my donation will create opportunities for dreams and hopes for students at the University. I will continue to follow the University’s activities and be happy to provide necessary support in the future." The 'Ajou University Fund for Pleasant Innovation' is a kind of development fund that was established after President Kim proposed 'Pleasant Innovation' as he took office. The Fund is used for projects that are in line with Ajou's values - challenge-taking, consideration of others, and creating win-win practices. The Pleasant Innovation projects currently include the After You Program, Paran Semester, Ajou SOS Program for Hope, and the Global Internship Program, etc. President Kim said, "I hope that the Pleasant Innovation programs will go beyond Ajou's boundaries and bring meaningful changes to universities across South Korea. In this sense, it is even more significant that Chairman Kim recognized the missions of our projects without any previous relationship with the University." After the ceremony, Chairman Kim and President Kim attended the 17th Ajou Brown Bag Meeting and talked with students in a casual setting. CEO Hyun Bae Kim from Bekei Korea, a subsidiary of Heesung & H, also joined the event. The donation is the first case in which President Kim worked together with the External Relations Team under the Office of the President to attract financial contributions, and it is expected to lead to even more vigorous campaigns in the future.

Ajou’s officials discuss mutual cooperation with World-OKTA at its Leaders Convention [2016.04.26] Ajou University officials including President Dong Yeon Kim attended the 18th World Federation of Overseas Korean Traders Associations (World-OKTA) Leaders Convention & Export Discussion Meeting. World-OKTA, an association of economic and trade activities for Korean businesspeople based in different countries around the globe, is forming a close relationship with the University for mutual cooperation and exchange. Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi and Vice President for External Relations Byung Chun So joined President Kim at the event, which was held in Ulsan for three days and four nights from April 22nd. They discussed mutual cooperation and exchanges with World-OKTA Chairman Ki Chool Park and Ulsan City Mayor Ki Hyeon Kim. World-OKTA has closely worked together with the University on operating internship programs and the Global Startup Academy. Twenty corporate members of World-OKTA recently expressed their willingness to provide internship programs for about thirty students from Ajou. The companies are doing business in various regions, including North America (the U.S. and Canada), Europe (Romania and Hungary), Southeast Asia (Malaysia and Thailand, etc.), China, and Japan. The Global Internship Program will be carried out in connection with Paran Semester – Ajou's Creative Activity Program . On April 23rd, President Kim gave a lecture under the tile of ‘Pleasant Innovation 2’ at the Next Generation Forum during the Convention. President Kim said, “The hub of South Korea’s manufacturing industry cluster in southeastern cities, including Busan, Ulsan, and Pohang, is facing a crisis,” adding, “We can draw a clue to the fundamental reason from the match between AlphaGo and Sedol Lee.” He went on to say, “The match cast doubt on the widely accepted 'standards' in Go games," adding, "It also suggested that we break the existing framework through critical and creative thinking instead of always trying to find 'the right answer,' and that we open our minds to innovation and correcting imbalances in our society." After President Kim's lecture, Deputy Director Kyeong Ho Kim of the LINC Project Group presented on the operational plan for the 'World-OKTA – Ajou University Global Startup Academy.' Dean Beon Jin Lee of Ajou's College of Pharmacy receives the Order of Science and Technology Merit [2016.04.22] Dean Beon Jin Lee (pictured above) of Ajou University College of Pharmacy was selected as the recipient of the Order of Science and Technology Merit (Doyak Medal in the Chemical Engineering and Bio Science Division). The Order of Science and Technology Merit is presented by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning to those who have contributed significantly to the development of science and technology on the occasion of Science Day. The award ceremony for the Order recipients was held on the morning of April 21st at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology in Hongneung, Seoul, during the event to celebrate the 49th Science Day. Dean Beon Jin Lee received the Order in recognition of his contributions to developing highly efficient and improved new medicines and other excellent medications and for his active participation in research projects for the public good. He worked to establish the six-year education system for pharmacy colleges and foster talents while serving as the President of the Korean Association of Pharmacy Education for two years from February 2014. The awards presented on the occasion of Science Day – April 21 – include Orders, Medals, Presidential Accolades, and Prime Minister's Accolades in six divisions (Basic and Original Technology for the Future; Information, Electronics, and Communications; Machinery, Facilities, and Materials; Chemical Engineering and Bio Science; Energy, Resources, and Environment; and Science and Technological Promotion).

Former Unification Minister Gil Jae Ryu gives a special lecture at the Gyeonggi Unification Forum [2016.04.21] Former Unification Minister Gil Jae Ryu gave a special lecture under the theme "Unification Still Matters" at the Gyeonggi Unification Forum, which was hosted by Ajou University and the Unification Education Center for Southern Gyeonggi Province. The lecture was held on the afternoon of April 21st in the University's Video Conference Room with about 100 students, professors, and staff members in attendance from the University. It aimed at enhancing awareness of and interest in unification among the participants. In his lecture, former Minister Ryu said, "Unification should be seen from the perspective of 'the process' rather than 'the results,'" adding, "It is a way for Koreans to restore our national pride and prosper in the geopolitical environment surrounded by global powers." He went on to say, "One of the fundamental requirements in creating a unification-friendly environment is that South Korea should become a healthy and attractive society," adding, "'Sense of unity' is more important than 'intellectual understanding' regarding unification, which is why educating our children and young people is most essential and urgent." The Gyeonggi Unification Forum features bi-monthly special lectures by distinguished invited guests and is hosted by Ajou University after it was selected as the Unification Education Center for Southern Gyeonggi Province. The University is serving as a central institution for unification education in southern Gyeonggi Province after it was recently designated by the Ministry of Unification as the Unification Education Center for the region in the '2016 Regional Unification Education Centers Project.' The University opened the Unification Institute last December and is taking the lead in developing unification education models after it was selected as the 'Unification Education Leading University' in March. The University is the only institution to be designated by the Ministry of Unification as the Unification Education Leading University and the Regional Unification Education Center.

The Ajou President Bread event is held in partnership with the LINC Project Group [2016.04.20] On April 19th, the Ajou President Bread event was held in the square at the side of the University Central Library to encourage Ajou University students who are preparing for the mid-term examination. During the event, President Dong Yeon Kim, Vice President for Student Affairs Jai Hyoung Cho, Deputy Director Kyeong Ho Kim of the LINC Project Group, and students from the General Student Council distributed bread and milk to students who dropped by and talked with them. President Kim then went to meet other students to deliver refreshments in another event called 'President Comes to You.' He met and talked with students taking the Intensive IT Course, who are now working on their final presentations. After that, he dropped by Team Bitsam and handed out bread and milk along with words of encouragement to its members. Team Bitsam is participating in Paran Semester with its task entitled "Making and Displaying Projection Mapping." The 'President Comes to You' event was based on prior applications and prepared for those students who are unabe to attend the Ajou President Bread event. The refreshments distribution events, which have been organized by the University's LINC (Leaders in INdustry-college Cooperation) Project Group in time for tests, aim to promote the Project and general collaboration between industries and academia among students. The Project, which began in 2012 by the Ministry of Education, aims to improve the competitiveness of domestic universities and local communities and corporations by upgrading the quality of university education in line with the needs of industry. A ceremony is held for the presentation of Akyung Scholarship certificates to twenty six students[2016.04.19]On the afternoon of April 18th, a ceremony was held for presenting the Akyung Scholarship certificates at Ajou University’s Video Conference Room in Yulgok Hall. For the spring semester of the 2016 academic year, the Akyung Scholarship Foundation presented a total of twenty-six students with scholarship funds worth 64 million won. The certificate presentation ceremony was attended by the scholarship recipients and the Akyung Scholarship Foundation officials including Chairman Hyeong Gyun Kim. President Dong Yeon Kim, deans of the colleges, and vice presidents joined the event from the University. The event began with a progress report by Secretary General Dong Ki Kim from the Foundation, followed by the presentation of scholarship certificates, words of appreciation read by the representative of the scholarship recipients, words of encouragement delivered by Chairman Kim of the Foundation, and a congratulatory speech by President Dong Yeon Kim. Chairman Hyeong Gyun Kim of the Foundation said, “I would like to congratulate and give words of encouragement to all the scholarship recipients here and thank each and every donor,” adding, "I ask that the scholarship students grow into talents who will play important roles in our society and become respected donors for the Akyung Scholarship Foundation." President Dong Yeon Kim said, "I believe that those who spend their money wisely are 'the true rich' and deeply appreciate all the donors," adding, "My advice to the scholarship students in difficult situations is that the challenges you are now going through may turn out to be 'a disguised blessing.'" YTN introduces Ajou’s Paran Semester and the After You Program [2016.04.18]Ajou University’s Paran Semester - Creative Activity Program and the After You Program were introduced on YTN’s ‘Campus 24’ segment, which covers up-to-date news about universities, including entrance information, and is aired at 3:30 p.m. every Saturday. Paran Semester is a program that Ajou University introduced this spring semester and students participating in it can obtain 3-18 regular credits when they successfully carry out the tasks they designed themselves. Forty-two teams of 120 students are taking on various challenges under the program. From among the student participants, ‘Campus 24’ introduced the Formula 250 Team (Bo Seon Kim, Yu Jin Kim, Dong Jun Seo, Hyo Jun Yoon, Woo Yeong Lee, Eui Il Jung, Ho Gyun Choi, and Ki Cheon Han from the Department of Mechanical Engineering), the three-member independent game producing team (Min Jae Won, Ji Hun Joo, and Byeong Jun Yoon from the Department of Digital Media), and the projection mapping production team (Byeong Guk Gong, Tae San Kim, Hee Soo Kim, Hyeon Woo Park, Soo Yeong Baek, Myeong Soo Suh, Jeong Yoo, Jin Hyeok Lee, Chae Seok Lim, and Da Hye Jung from the Department of Digital Media). In an interview with YTN, Ajou’s President Dong Yeon Kim said, “It would be great if students find what they really want to do through Paran Semester. But, it is okay if they don’t,” adding, “I hope that they continue to train themselves and try to find what they want to do, which will take them closer to ‘the jobs they truly want to do.’ That is the purpose of Paran Semester.” ‘Campus 24’ also introduced the After You Program, which is an overseas training course launched by the University for students having difficulty in building overseas experience because of financial difficulties. Ajou’s Dean of the College of Humanities Man Ghyu PAK is elected as the first President of the Council of Humanities College Deans from Private Universities [2016.04.18] On April 15th, Man Ghyu PAK, Ajou University Dean of the College of Humanities, was elected as the first President of the Council of Humanities College Deans from Private Universities during its inaugural meeting held at the University. Members of the Council hail from forty-two universities including Ajou, Yonsei, Sungkyunkwan, Hanyang, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Chosun, Dong-A, Wonkwang, Sangji, and Pai Chai. Seven vice presidents, including Dean Jong Bok Kim from Kyung Hee, and two auditors were also appointed. The leadership election was followed by presentations on pending issues regarding humanities by Dean Eun Ju Kwak from Sejong University and Dean Ki Yong Choi from Kwangwoon University. After being appointed as the first president, Pak said, “I will focus on the following areas: actively participating in evaluating government policies and related systems regarding humanities education and in the relevant policy-making; seeking ways to induce the business community to change its perception of humanities colleges; exploring ways to improve education and research at humanities colleges; and finding ways for humanities colleges to enhance their status within respective universities.”

A ceremony is held to present certificates of the 'Kim Su Jeong Scholarship' [2016.04.11] At 5 p.m. on April 11th, a ceremony was held in Yulgok Hall's Conference Room 1 at Ajou University to present certificates of the 'Kim Su Jeong Scholarship.' The ceremony was attended by Ho Yeong Suh, mother of the late Su Jeong Kim, ten scholarship students, Vice President for Planning, Vice President for Student Affairs, and directors and other officials from the students' departments, etc. Mrs. Suh gave certificates of scholarships and words of encouragement to the students and the representative of the students gave back a flower bouquet and read words of appreciation. The ten students received a total of fifteen million won, with 1.5 million won given to each of them. The scholarship students are Hyeon Yeong Kim (Department of Chemical Engineering), Hyeon Do Kim (Department of Materials Science and Engineering), Da Ye Kim (Department of Materials Science and Engineering), Mi Ji Kim (Department of Architecture), Jin Ho Choi (Department of Mathematics), Jeong Gu Choi (Department of Physics), Geon Hong Choi (Department of e-Business), Eun Taek Lim (Department of Psychology), Seok Yeong Koh (Department of Medical Sciences), and Min Gyu Lee (Department of Medical Sciences). The 'Kim Su Jeong Scholarship' was established in 2015 when Kim's father Jung Gweon Kim (entering class of 1973, Ajou's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) and his wife donated 300 million won in scholarships to the University in accordance with the wishes of their late daughter after she died from lymphatic cancer in October 2014. The scholarship funds are awarded each semester to two students in the School of Medicine wishing to major in lymphatic cancer, one student from Ajou’s Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC), and seven students in difficult financial conditions. In her words of encouragement, Mrs. Suh said, "I am pleased that the scholarship was created under my daughter's name and the funds are presented each semester. It is even more meaningful because this is based on my daughter's wishes."

A team led by Ajou's Professor Hwan Myung Kim publishes the third paper in The Chemical Science, a renowned journal in chemistry [2016.04.11] A research paper authored by the team of Ajou University Professor Hwan Myung Kim (Department of Chemistry, Department of Energy System Research of the Graduate School) was published on April 7th in the online edition of The Chemical Science, which is issued by the Royal Society of Chemistry of the U.K. Cheol Ho Huh (doctoral course), Sang Jun Park (combined master's and doctorate program), and Avik Sarkar (postdoctoral course) worked together as the first authors for the paper, which is entitled "A Ratiometric Two-Photon Probe for Quantitative Imaging of Mitochondrial pH Values." 'A two-photon fluorescent probe' is a next-generation imaging material that can detect the quantity of different chemical species within organisms in real time. The results can be used in a precise diagnosis. Existing fluorescent probes use short wavelength light with high energy level (ultraviolet rays - visible rays) as the excitation source. That can cause damage to organism samples and allow for observing only the surface of tissues because the light cannot penetrate deep into them. The two-photon fluorescent probe, however, uses infrared rays with lower energy levels and deep penetration capability, which allows for observing inside the tissues of live organisms at the sub-cellular level through three-dimensional high-definition imaging. Professor Kim's team earlier published two papers on February 23th and October 27th last year in The Chemical Science, which is an influential journal in chemistry with an Impact Factor of 9.211 in 2014. The papers are entitled "A Quadrupolar Two-Photon Fluorescent Probe for In Vivo Imaging of Amyloid-β Plaques" and "A Carboxylesterase-Selective Ratiometric Fluorescent Two-Photon Probe and Its Application to Hepatocytes and Liver Tissues," respectively. Professor Kim said, "My team is currently conducting research on applying 'two-photon fluorescent probes' to the precise diagnosis and treatment of diseases," adding, "I plan to focus on developing various imaging materials and innovative and advanced diagnosis platforms." The research was conducted with the support of the Progressive Research Project and the Priority Research Institutes Project, which are carried out by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning.
